When you talk with an Australian based Local Search person (like me!) about getting your business better visibility in Google’s local search results, one of the first things they’ll ask you is: “Are you on Google Places?”
Getting into Google Places for Business (to give it its proper name) is the first step to improving your local search results, and is surprisingly easy to do.
Once you’ve listed your business on Google Places, and verified it, you’ll find your business also appears on Google+ and Google Maps.
In your Google Places listing you can add
- photos and videos;
- details about the brands you sell;
- custom categories – like “Indian restaurant” or “women’s hair-dresser”
- opening hours; and
- a description about the business.
Google claims that it is an easy way to maintain an online presence without a website, but I wouldn’t go that far. It is definitely a good way to maintain a presence in Google’s local search results though!
