Should you use video to improve your local search results?
I got asked this the other day and my answer was “It depends.” (Don’t you hate that answer?)
How do you feel about being on camera?
Using video makes a lot of sense when you consider that YouTube is the #2 search engine in the world. It is heavily indexed by Google and you can link your YouTube account to your Google+ Local page making it even easier for people to find your content.
So if you’re comfortable putting your face in front of a camera then definitely go for it!
BUT if you’re the shy, retiring type (like me, no seriously, I am the poster child of Introverts United) and you hate the idea of being filmed then video is not the way to go.
You will end up looking as uncomfortable as you feel and that won’t make for good video at all.
Does your industry support it?
The other thing to consider is the industry you’re in.
Some industries are just not suitable for filming unless you’re doing a documentary. You’ll know best if your business is one of those.
As a hint though, anything that involves the deeper parts of our personal lives probably isn’t suitable.
Do you have the time?
The final thing to consider is time. Although it is very easy nowadays to shoot video on your smartphone, to get a really good product you may need to do post-production work.
Post-production can involve editing, narration and maybe even adding a soundtrack – all things that take much longer than you think they will (trust me, been there, done that!)
So my final answer is?
If you’ve able to tick all the boxes (comfortable in front of the camera; video friendly industry; time in abundance) then yes YouTube is a great option for your Local SEO strategy.
In fact, what are you waiting for? Get over there, set up a channel and start uploading your videos!
Don’t forget to send me a link once you’re done – I’d love to see what you’re producing.
